THE PROMISE OF SPRING The Spring Show of the Taupo Horticultural and Beautifying Society, held on Thursday last, was a pleasant augury, a token of Nature's awakening from her winter sleep. As sung I in the Gilbert and Sullivan Opera, "The Mikado":
'The Flowers that bloom in the Spring, Tra-la ! Give promise of Merry Sunshine. As we merrily dance and we sing, Tra-la 1 We welcome the hope that they bring, Tra-la ! Of a Summer of roses and wine." The mysterious showings of life when all Nature quickens with the advent of Spring have inspired philosophers, poets and musicians for ages. There is a kind of kindling I expectancy in the air of good things to come, a pleasurable tingling popularly described as "the Spring feeling." T{iis Spring-time buoyancy of spirit manifests itself throughout the world in floral festivals and dances. There is a general rejoicing that the winter is over, and summer is around the corner. A cynic was once heard to remark: "Yes, and another thing round the corner is the lawnmower." And so we come down to earth. In Taupo there is fnuch serious business round the corner. There is the War Memorial Hall, the Summer Carnival to raise the rest of the money needed to pay for it. There are preparations to be made for the summer influx of tourists and Ashers. There is the completion of the Hatepe hydro electricity scheme in time to make good the assurance of the Chairman of the Town Board (Mr Story), that Taupo Township will be floodlit before Christmas. And the A.C. Baths. Into all of these things that, like Summer, are just round the corner, there will at least be injected something akin to the "Spring feeling" that stirs the blood and energises human activities, if we are to have "a summer of roses and wine." , That Spring flowers are blooming in so many gardens in Taupo is an answer, emphasised by the quality of the show blooms displayed in Rickit's Hall last week, to the question put by visitors, can one grow things in this kind of soil ? We can, and * do, if our gardeners study and handle their problems intelligently. - *
