TAUPO GIRL GUIDES
AN ENJOYABLE HIKE On Mondiay,, August 25th., the Taupo Girl Guides held a hike, arranged by the Captain and one of her officers, Miss Judy Thompson. On account of it being a most gorgeous day, and the wonderful hospitality of the host and hostess, Mr and Mrs Ted Pearse (of Pearse's Auto Park), the Hike turned out a tremedoup success. In addition to an ordinary hike, a lot of second-class work was done, namely service, inftelligence, fire-lighting, stalking, tracking, lighting a fire with two matches cnly, and Red Cross First Aid. Quite a rumber of girls going for their second class badge passed in these subject s.
It was a big day, full of excitement. Quite a few games were played, hiking songs were sung, anu: good team spirit prevailed throughout the day. The highlight of the Hike was grilled sausages, which were kindly donated by the Guides' good friend Mr B. Price. Each guide grille-P her own sausages, there being oniy one fatality, this being one sausage w^hich- fell off the stick and was burnt to death. These were* followed by bread and butter and« blaekberry jplly, fruit salad and strawberry jelly, sponge cake, fresh apples, chocolate biscuits and hot cocoa.
After lunch the company sat quiet for a while during which the Captain outlined the rest of the programme for the day. Two of the girls during the morning failed tc nass their stalking test, so the Captain set them a second test in the afternoon, which they passed. As this concluded most of the activities of the day, the Company had afternoon tea, packed up, and tracked back to Captain's garden, , where Lieut. Thompson took a very nice photo. Four Guides were sent tc Mr and (Mrs Pearse to thank them for a glorious day. After singing "Taps", all dispersed for home. This Hike was arranged as a reward for very good work done by the Company during the first ternt of their year. Some of the markings of the first sixteen weeks included two "excellents," a number of "very good," "very fair," and "fair." ,"This to my wa y of thinksaid Captain Peart, is an excellent record for a start, and we sincerely hope that the good work will continue." On account of so much illness among Guides and parents, it was found necessary to postpone the Executive Meetihg. Notices of the next Meetihg will be advertised. The first meeting of "Brownies*' will take plaee on Saturday, September 13th., at 11 a.m., when nevy recruits will be enrolled.
