(Pukawa Branch) Again two very pleasant and enjoyable euchre evenings were spent at Hopkin's and Lake Timber Mills by the members and supporters of the "Pukawa Branch." Prizes were gratefully donated by Mrs Pou Mariu, Moana family and Lake Timber supporters. Supper was provided by the Amorangi, Derby, Pou Mariu and Hepi families. Winners: — • First evening: Gents euchre, Mr. T. Duff; ladies euchre: Mrs Amorangi jnr.; raffle: Lillian Derby; games: M. Kapu. Second evening: Gents euchre, Mr Simon Warren; ladies euchre: Mrs Joseph Hepi; booby,* Mr G, ; Derby; raffle: Mrs Ted Moana. The committee is very grateful to Mr Joseph Hepi and Mrs Heni Hepi and helpers, for preparing tables, chairs and hall. It is also grateful to the Lake Timber Manager, Mr C. O'Brien and his firm for providing a suitable building for the benefit of Ahe community, It is with regret the Ghairlady Mrs Amorangi snr. has been absent from these two functions because of | serious illness and it is sincerely hoped she will have a very speedy rec avery. Mr "Darkie" [Mariu has returned wnth his parents from Christchurch after attending* the ordination of his sister Theresa Mariu, who has aecepted the Order Of the Sister of Our Lady Of The Mission. - It is certainly a huge honour to the Maori people and also to the Tuwharetoa Tribes for this honour bestowed upon one of their own. "Sister Katherine" was educated at Waihi Convent, Tokaanu, and St. Joseph's Maori Girls College, Green Meadows, Napier. She has the best wi&hes of this small community. To her family and teachers success congratulations.

'f sp TAUPO WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

There was a good attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Taupo Women's Institute, which was held last Wednesday. Arrangements were made for an Institute birthday party to be held next month on Tuesday, September 16, instead of the followirig day, when the Horticultural Society will be using the hall for their Spring Flower Show. Schedules for the Annual Spring Show of the Institute, which has been arranged for Thursday, October 23 will be available shortly at the various shop counters. Mrs King brought back from Wellington a very good report of the Biennial Conference of the Dominion Federation of the New Zealand Country Women's Institute s held last month and portions of her repoit will appear in the Times as space permits. The following were the winners in the August competitions: Decorated biscuit tin, Mrs A. Wilson; jar of pickies, Mrs D. Coley; best vegetable and bloom, Mrs Stowe; best spray, Miss McClymont. There will be only one competition for the Birthday Month meeting and that will be .the best bowl of spring fiowers.

. Successful €£Briog and Buy,? On Saturday, August 16th thd 1st Taupo Girl Gulde Company Local Association held a "Bring and Buy,; at RickiUs Hall. Although there were greater attractions in Taupo this certainly came in for its share of 'patronage. The different stalls were well stocked with good things and by the end of the day there was Httle left. The following people donated different articles for competition, namely: Mrs Edlin, a pair of nylon stockings, won by Mr Joe Dunn; Mrs WatN

son, a beautiful cushion, won by Guide Patricia Thomas; Mrs Peart, a fruit cake, won by Lieut. J. Thompson ; Mrs Edlin, a tablecloth, won by Mrs Donnelly; Mr W. Price and Miss Raer a gorgeous dinner, won by Miss E.„ Rickit. During* the day Miss Rickit suppliad, tea and refreshments to the many workers. This was greatly appreciated., The Local Association was not strongly represented, but to one and all are extended greatest thanks for donations, help and goods; also to the Girl Guide Company which worked hard and diligently all day to assist the Local Association. The money raised will be used for incidental ex~ penses to keep the Company running: smoothly. Public response in al! ways was generous. Guide Activities During the Guide meeting Colonel J. D. Swan presented to Guide Karen Reed a pair of Indian clubs, this being a prize to the most improved girl in the Indian Club Squad. The squad is advancing well. No. 1 Marching Team continued their preliminary training uncler the direction of Colonel Swan, who explained to the girls direct response to all commands. The girls responded well. Leader Fat O'Brien and marker Jennifer Petiroi showed great proroise, little Colleen Erikson was a jo$ to watch. During the afternoon the Captain announced that there v/ould be an early enrolment, there being four fenderfoofc and one 2nd class Guide ready. Some of the others are working very hard to ccmplete their tests* Iieader Pat Thomas has been successful in passlng the following proffcienry badge tests: Cook's bodge, with very good marking; Toy Maker's Badge, with very excellent marking (106 per cent); Needlewoman's Badge, with good marking. The Church Parade held on a recent Sunday at St. Andrew's Church was a credit to the Company. The Rev. C. Salt provided an impressive sermon to the girls and complimented them on the reading of their own prayer, which he said, they did veiy well.
