WAR MEMORIAL HALL
THE FUND - RAISING CAMPAIGN It is stated that the plans for the War Memorial Hall have arrived from the architect, and are now being considered. When finally approved a sketch plan will be published in the TIMES. Taupo's Carnival. Possibilities. In /the following statement, Mr E. E.^ Marsden stresses the advantages of Taupo's climate for outdoor carnival s, with special reference to the War .Memorial Hall Fund Campaign now in progress. "The progress of Taupo" he savs, "is bound un in the amenities and forms of entertainment provided for the local and the greatly augmented public in the holiday season. Watering places everywhere set themselves in a festive mood and make provision, more or less, to welcome an influx of visitors, and on the strength of their effort depends the enjoyment of the holiday 'visitors and their wish to "come again." Taupo, he added, naturally has a pulling power wfth its many scenic and tourist facilities, but this is not enough. to . provide a hundre'd per cent programme^ and that festive air so necessary to provide the ultimate in pleasure. That festive air can foe more enioyed outside, especially with Taupo's dependable climate coupled with the scenic and auditorium facilities. Furthermore, the outdoors is the only place that will take an unlimited audience, and this is the perquisite for financial results, and the assuranee that nobody will be shut out. The horizon of a committee should extend beyond the limits of four waUs. . To see a happy audienee of 3,000 would be more pleasing thar oue of 3^0. This is quite possible, not once, but many times with organized entertainment. This means, of course, a stage — one that would be adaptable for all forms of entertainment, of a temporary nature, if necessary, and set on a gentle sheltered stope, if possible. In a controlled area it would pav dividends.
In view of the Memorial Hall fund campaign, he continued, the time is rioe for some organised group of fun entertainers as a permanent body, catering at all holiday periods for the pleasure minded public. Money so raised to go towards providing needed amenities. One of its early jobs would be to assist the Hall committee in its campaign for funds. The businessmen who are vitally interested in this matter should be behind a move* to appoint an entertainment committee as a permanent body. There is good, and much work in the future to be accomplished.
Touching on a vital matter in the entertainment side, was 'the need of an organized body of singers and instrumentalists, who would be available to take up such work in - harmony or concerted numbers as occasion required," said Mr Marsden. He was disappointed at the apathy shown in endeavouring to get together a^ group for that very pleasant work of harmony singing, and whose services would be a very useful adjunct to many forms of entertainment. There would be nothing difficult about this work. A voice of ehoir standard able to take easy clnssic and pJantation harmonies, is all that is wanted. They would provide a very useful background for community singing, instrumental groups, soloists, pantomine, or Lake trips. Such a group associated with a versatile body of men, who would no doubt be available to act as Fun Doctors, would give strength to a programme of entertainment. The essentials are practice and rehearsals, coupled with limited time. Mr Marsden concluded that he offered facilities, and an opporfunity, for singers, instrumentalists, dancers, and character artists to jery materia lly assist the Hall funds by offering their services and
ensuring good drawing programmes. Singers, both ladies and gentlemen, who are wil-ling to take up this harmony work, are invited to have a talk with Mrs Sally Kent.
