THEIR EXCELLENCIES DEPART

Tyj"OTHING could have excelled the warmth and spontaneity of the farewells accorded to Lord and Lady Freyberg on the occasion of their departure from New Zeaiand last week. The remarkable demonstration of good feellng and genuine regret at the final leave-taking in Wellingtcil was characteristic of the valedictory good wlshes extended to their Exceliencies in their farewell tour cf the various centres throughout the country during recent weeks. In a previous edition of the Times, to mark the occasion of Lord Freyberg^ last fishing holiday in Taupo before relinquishing h'.s official duties as Governor-General, we expressed on behalf of the people of the Taupo Country an appreciation of his devoted service in the discharge of the responsibilities of his high office— an appreciation which, we felt assured, would be endersed by all our readers. It was a tribute to a distinguished citizen cf the British Commonwealth, born and schooled in New Zeaiand, a brave and competent soldiei;, an efficient military commander, and a Governor-General who in eveijy way has justified his vice-regal appointment. We join with other centres in the expressions of goodwill extended to Lord and Lady Freyberg on their departure to England, and trust they will enjoy the peaceful relaxation now due to them after the strain of the war years, and the responsibilities — social and official — of their viceregal term.
