TAUPO PUBLIC WORKS
A Saving To The Town It may not be generally realised that under the present system of\ supervising the works programme ) of the Taupo Town Board, a considerable saving has been effected. In | reply to a question put to him by a \ Times representative as to whether it was intended to appoint an engineer for the duties previously carried out by Mr Frice, who resigned some / time ago, The chairman of the board. j Mr J. Story, explained that it hacl j been decided that the Works Cem- . mittee shouid exercise a general oversight of the works programme, with himself, as chairman of the commit-/ tee, acting as supervisor without emolument, in a strictly honorary capacity. "This arrangement," be added, "means a saving to the ratepayers of between £650 and £750 aV year for a salaried engineer." On the subject oi the Hatepe Hy-dro-Electricity Scheme, Mr Story said" that f.ne weather had unaDled ?o A prcgress to be made. The pipes have been removed from the diversion tunnel, and the dam itself raised anothei six feet. The forebay is ready for the reception of the pipes for the penstock leadlng to the turbines, and the powerhouse for the smaller of the two generators has been completed. It was unfortunate that the contractor for the reticulaticn had to be granted a release on account of labour difficulties. As decided at the last meeting of the board, the work was being given to the next lowest tenderer. •
