Oruanui had a slight territorial advantage throughout the first half of their match against Hydro, but their only scor6 came from a movement started from halfway when R. Habib carried the ball nearly to the line and then handed on to Rangi Henry who scored for G. Habib to convert. After half time, which dame with the score unchanged, Hydro were awarded a penalty kick and Vedder attempted a goal from the .25 yard line wide out. On being given a secdnd attempt, he hit the post just under the bar with a good effort. Soon after this the referee showed the strictness of his control of the game when, after repeated warnings he sent an Oruanui player oif the field for making an offensiive remark. In spite of the fact that they were now playing with only fourteen men, Oruanui attacked strongly, and a promising movement only broke down when a Hydro forward tackled their right wing strongly and pushed | him into touch. Hydro attacked | again and a penalty given them 10 | yards from the touch line, was put over the bar with a good kick by M. Wa 11, The Oruanui forwards soon took the ball down to their opponents territory, and from some loose play the ball went out to R. Habib, who made enough ground to score near the posts, but the kick went astray and Oruanui led 8-3. Hydro attacked again, but they could not finish a promising movement which petered out with a forward pass. In the closing minutes Oruanui attacked again, and were i lucky enough to be awarde a kick » right on time when some Hydro , players followed the ball too keenly ; rou nd the scrum and G. Maroa the home team was too j strong for United, although the latfcer were the first to score when Kahia started a forward rush and with several other forwards over-ran the ball, which was then picked up and sent out to Dick Ramekaywho went over for a try. Tohara levelled the scores j by kicking a penalty goal for Maro a 1 After the interval Maroa ran out j to a 9-3 lead with two tries, and in the elosing stages Tomoana the United half back obtained the ball j from a scrum near the line and doged through to reduce the gap to 3 points— the match ending with Maroa the winners by 9 points to 6.
