GARRETT SHIELD WAITAHANUI WINS NARROWLY AGAIN Waitahanui 9, Hydro 8. Maroa 8, Oruanui 3. Playing at Taupo on July 6, Waitahanui for the second week in succession pulled a losing game out of the fire, and won by the same marwin and with the sanie scores as they did against Maroa. Hydro attacked strongly from the start and were getting the ball in the scrums in the early play, but gradually the heavier Waitahanui forwards asserted themselves, and the play travelled down to the Hydro end of the field. From loose play an opening was made for Loughlin who cleverly swept down a high pass and dashed in, for a good try. The kick was unsuccessful and indecisive play continued for the rest of the first half. Waitahanui 3, Hydro 0. Fresh again at the commencement of the second half Hydro swept to the attack and made two or three strong challenges. In the first of these Tierney kicked, and followed up, but Beale, full back for Waitahanui beat him to the touch down. Five minutes later following up a fotward rush Tierney won the race for the ball and the subsequent conversion by P. Kahia placed Hydro in the lead by 5 points to 3. Rain came soon after, and Waitahanui attacked again, but L. Erickson obtained the ball, and ran half the length of the field down the rig'ht wing to score near the touch line and put Hydro further ahead at 8-3. Faced again with the prospect of defeat, Waitahanui awoke and heeled and handled well. Two penalties were missed, but T. Wall got the ball in a rush on the right wing, and reached the line just as G. Comer tackled him. Hydro 8, Waitahanui 6. A Hydro counter-attack followed, 'but Beale touch ed down after a kick and follow up by Comer, Waitahanui then got into its stride again, and from indecisive play on their opponents twenty-five, R. Biddhs scored near the left-wing touch line to gh*e his siae a one point lead. A further Hydro attack was relieved by Loughlin, who was playing his last game in Taupo before leaving for Dannevirke.
