TAUPO RATEPAYERS' ASSOCIATION
MANY QUESTIONS V ENTILATED A meeting of the Taupo Ratepayers' Association was held at Mr Ted Pearse's on Monday, June 30. Mr Birnie, chairman, opened the meeting by welcoming Mr G. Sutherland as a new committee member. The main business of the evening was the delegates' report from their meeting with the Town Board to diseuss various matrers which had been the subject of correspondence. Town Board Engineer. The Town Board is holding this position over for a year. Meantime Mr J. Story, chairman of the Taupo Town Board, has offered his services in this capacity free of charge. It was agreed unanimbusly that a let ter eonveying a sincere vote of thanks on behalf of the ratepayers , of Taupo be sent to Mr Story. Mr Price. The subject of Mr Price's departure, without a gesture of farewell was discussed, and the Town Board assured delegates that Mr Price had ; expressed a wish for no public farewell. Oerk of Works. Upon enquiry the association was informed that Mr Malaquin hadbeen appointed to this position by ! Mr Mandeno. Electric ,Power Scheme. ; j Briefly — it was learned that the j /jontract price to the Tapper Con- | struction Co. and two other compan- ! ies for supplementary work is j £41,000. The only alteration ih j the contract is provision for a larg- ! er stand for a bigger plant. Alu- j minium wire will be used except in j long stretches over gullies, where j 'Copper wire will be^mployed. Bailding Inspectar. Delegates were infortoed that ! this position is purely a minor one, j and for three months only. Dele- I gates did not agree that the posi- I tion is a minor one and insisted that j the ^acancy be advertised.
Posiponed Regular Board Meetings. | Mr J. Storey promised that if a j regular meeting of the Town Board j were postponed for any special rea- j son, notice of such postponement [ would be displayed upon the Notice! Board. Mr Burroughs. The subject of tne work being done by Mr Burroughs was fully discussed, as it was the generalopinion that this work should have been subject to tender. However, it appears that Mr Burroughs had the only suitable machine in the district for the class of work in- ' volved.
Mil! Refuse. This has been the subject of letters to the Editor of the Times and caused acute feeling in many quarters. The Ratepayers' Association have been definitely assured that the Town j Board will not permit mill refuse to be dumped and burned within the town area. lChildretn's Playground* After *weeks of discussion on the pro's and con's, a culminating point was reached on Wednesday, July 2, when members from the Ratepayers' Association Committee and . Businessmen's Committee met the Town Board to finalise the matter. It transpired that the iSouth-East end of the Domain be used for a Children's Playground, and that the necessary arrangements and organisation of such playground be proeeeded with immediately. By the Holiday ISeason there should be provision for many hours of fun for local and visiting children. Memorial iHall. A strong suggestion has ben put forward to the Town Board that immediate new tenders be called for the erection of the R.S.A. Hall, so that one and all may know the aim \
in view; and that when tenders are I reeeived the Town Board convene a meeting of various local associations and sports bodies to diseuss practical means of raising the extra money involved. Information Bureau. The meeting agreed that the association support Mr Mervyn Svenson in his scheme to establish an Information Bureau, and that he be asked to attend the next meeting of the committee of the Ratepayers' Association to consider ways and means of promoting such a service. Letter of Appreciation to the /Town Board. The meeting was in hearty agreement that a vote of thanks and appreciation be accorded the Town Board in meetingf the Ratepayers' Association, and elucidating the many probleTns which confronted fchem. The meeting closed with expression of thanks to Mr Pearse for cnce again allowing the committee the use of his eomfortable lounge.
