JAPANESE DEER

In the Taupo Times of June li (writes Mr H. Hayhow, from Marewa, Napier), there is mention in the Hatepe Ldter of Japanese deer. This reminds me that while employed by Messrs Crowther and McAuley I released five Japanese deer at the then called Taharua St.ition, 10 miles in from the Rangitaiki Hotel, ahout the year 1915. We took charge of thrm at Taupo. - Where they came fronp to. Taupo I can't quite remember. We also released some Red Deer at Tarawera, and became so tame that they became a nuisance, coming right into the hotel. [Note: — We thank Mr Hayhow for his interesting* item. It has been estimated by Stalkers in the Kaimaniwa bush country that the - Japanese deer have increased to the number of some four or five thousand. — Editor.]
