Rugby and Basketbail Oii Saturday, J une 14, imder ideal weather conditions, and before an ap| reciative group oi suppoi*ters, the Taupo Distriot Primary Sehools Sports Association launched its first rcund of Saturday competitions in both football and basketbail. The nest series of games will, therefore, be played on Saturday, June 28th. The sehools which took part in Saturday 's games were: Taupo B.H.S., Waitahanui, Oruanui, Maroa arid Mokai. Unfortunately, TaurangaTaupo were unable to come at the last minute owing to the lack of transport. Rere it should be mentioned that transport is a. major item w >th the outlying sehools. For in.stsnce, the northern group of sehools: Oruanui, Mokai and Maroa, paid £12 for their bus. . The football is played in two grades, under 7 stone and over 7 stone, with a welght limit of 10 stone 71bs., and an age limit of 15 years. For the hrst round, the play was of. a rea^onablq standard. As was to. be expected the senior game (i.e., over 7 stone players) provided the foest football. This game between Taupo and Northern was, very even, and it contained several patches of very- good football. The score 16-0 in Taupo's favour suggests that the game was not very even. However, untii 7 minutes before the final whistle, Taupo led only 3-0, from a try scored 5 minutes after the game be: gan, Bill Wineera. Taupo had the slighly mere fit team and as a result of continued pressure they piled u p 13 points; in the last 7 minutes. Bill Wineera scored 2 tries and converted two, while Laurence Knight scored two tries. It was a good game and gave prcmise of better to conie. In the under 7 stone games, Northern A: played twice in order to fill the gap left by the absence of Tau-ranga-Taupo, while in the basketbail (competition, Taupo C played in the place of T auranga-Taupo. The results of the under 7-stone football were: — Northern B v. Taupo B, 0-12 (Mr HardiTig);' Waitahanui v. Northern A, 6-13: (Mr Whittle); Taupo A v. "Northern A, 0-0 (Mr Whittle).
