TAUPO GIRL GUIDES
ENROLMENT CEREMONIAL An interesting and colourful event in Taupo was the enrolment ceremonial of the Girl Guides, which took place at Rickits Hall on Friday evening, June 20. The proceedings were opened by the Guide Captain, Mrs J. W. Peart, and there were present many prominent citizens, including the parents and guardians of the guides being enrolled. Also present were the Rev. Mr Salt, of St. Andrew's (Anglican), 'Qhurch, Father De Bree, St. Patrick's (Catholic) and H. W. Johnston, ;St. PauTs (Presbyterian).
The Girl Guide Commissioner for the southern Waikato district, Mrs I. Green of Rotorua, was present to enrol the girls. > The ceremonial part bf the proceedings opened with the girls marching into the horse-shoe formation at the signal from the Captain's whistle, and the colours were borne in by the colour party — Lieut. Tierney, Lieut. Thomson, (colour bearer), and Reeruit Betty Watson. This was quite an impressive show. The singing of the National Antheni then followed, after which the Girl Guide Commissioner was introdueed to the parents and Guides by Colonel J. D. Swan, O.B.E. A charming ceremonial followed when the Commissioner, assisted by the Captain and Lieut. Snooks, enrolled the girls. The colours were then march ed off, and the company sat round the camp fire for songs. The Rev C, G. G. Salt, to close the ceremonial part of the proceedings, then read the Guides, Prayer. In the course of a subsequent address Colonel Swan spoke in high terms of the Girl Guide movement. The commissioner added her eompliment on the fine appearance, uniforms, and deportment of the girls in general. On the word of eommand the girls then fell out and conducted their Commissioner to their display table, on which many articles made. by the guides, were laid out for inspection. The high standard of work sbown was the snbject of general favourable comment, as also was its usefulness in training the girls to become good citizens. During the evening the local association members were introdueed to the Commissioner, who gave them much useful and interesting information about the movement. Followed a raffle, tickets being drawn out of a hat for the winner of a cake made and beautifully decorated with the Guide Trefoil, by Lieut. Snooks. Colleen Erickson was deputed to dip into the hat, and amazingly enough drew her own number as the winner. A delectable s upper was then served to all present by the members of the local association assisted by the guides. A few more games were played and a happy evening was then brought to an end. Among other items of interest was a donation of £2 2/- from vColone! Swan for the best team work in the company. The donor also has present ed a cup for competition under j-cndiuons to be decided later. Grateful acknowledgement was made of the generous concession by Miss E. Rickits for the use of the hall for the enrolment ceremony, and also for future meetings of the Girl Guides free of charge.
