Above is a picture of the S.S. "Tongariro" on the day she was launched on the Lake in 1901. Moored alongside the bank is Captain Dan Ferney's "Tauhara," the first steam vessel on the Lake. The "Tongariro" was built by Messrs Bailey & Lowe, of Auckland, on the Landing Reserve, Taupo, from materials prefabricated in Auckland. She was a wood-burner, and did the Taupo-Tokaanu run in from 2½ to 3 hours. A Taupo resident who was on board on the trial run is Mrs George Reid, snr.
