THE RUGBY SEASON

Maroa 9 Oruanui 3 A fine display of rugby was witnessed on Sunday last in the matcb between Maroa and Oruanui. Right from the kick-ofF both sets of forwards had a great tussle. Midway in the first half the weight of the Oruanui forwards began to tell. Collins, for Oruanui, who was following tris pack all the way snappily picked up the ball and after a short sprint dashed over the line to score the first and only try for his side. The kick, taken By" R. Martin, went astray. At this stage of the game, M. Cooper and F. Rivers were the two most prominent forwards in the Oruanui pack, while J. Collins, G. Habit and M. Wilcox played very sound rugby. Half time saw the scores unchanged. i When play was resumed, the honxe team, which had been playing a solid game throughout, allow,ed G. Kapua to score within one minute of the whistle. An attempt by G. Harris to convert the try failed. At this stage, as the result of wintry weather conditions . prevailing throughout the match, Collins was unfortunate enough to receive a kick on the knee from a team mate, ren# ering him useless from further play. His mate had made tiie mistake of tackling one of his own side. i 1 With the Oruanui keyman off the field the team collapsed, and Maroa was quick to seize the advantage, and numerous passing rushes by the fleet home backs ensued. G. Rangi crossed the line but the try was not converted. Maroa 6. Oruanui ; , 3. Another try was scored shortly after an interlude of scissors passing and scrummaging, when B. Seymour crossed the line. T. Tohara took the kick, but the ball dropped short. The g*ame ended with a win for Maroa by 9 points to three. Good football was played by S. Andrews, and also by 'the Maroa back line. In the excitement aroused by the keen contest some of the spectators got slightly out of hand and indulged in abusive remarks addressed to other barrackers and to the referee, Mr Stan Taylor, who took these tfiings in good part, and made a capable controller of the game.
