Lakeside Team Wins

An end-of-the season match was played on the last Sunday in April, between the Lakeside Barbarians and Mangakino Barbarians, at Tihoi. The game produced some good scoring on both sides, particularly in the opening partnership for Mangakino which put on nearly 100 for the first wicket, and in the middle o^ the Lakeside innings when Frank Beckett, McKean and Collett handled the Mangakino bowling with confidence. Mangakino Barbarians batted first and were given an excellent start by N. East and Davis, the former scoring an aggressive 43 runs until he failed to hook Dean from the off stump and was bowled. The remaining batsftien did not give Davis much assistance owing to some inspired bowling by Jimmy Dean whose sawying approach to the wicket disconcerted all. Davis had the distinction of carrying his bat right through the innings for 68, but Collett and McKean helped to dispose of the rest of the team, the latter finishing with the good figures of 3 wickets for 23 runs in a total of 155. The Lakeside batsmen were soon in difficulties with 3 wickets down for 8 runs. However they were heartened by some hurricane hitting by Frank Beckett, who lifted the ball wide and high before being dismissed for 53 runs including four sixes and five fours. Collett and McKean scored steadily, and with a tail that quivered the score was taken to 182 runs giving the Lakeside Barbarians a win on the first innings by 27 runs. At the gathering held before the players returned to their home towns the teams were entertainecl by impromptu performances by Messrs Lowry and Inch of Mangakino.
