FIRE AT MISSION BAY

Prompt Action Saves Houses Prompt action by two fire officers of the Tuwharetoa rural fire district, Messrs W. Temaira and P. Maniapoto, assisted by two passers-by, and witnessed by Mr E. B. K. Gordon, M.P. for Rangitikei, prevented a fire that started in five acres of fern and scrub at Mission Bay, on the shores of Lake Taupo, from spreading to a group of houses and baches. The flames were first noticed by fire officer P. Maniapoto at 2 p.m. on Sunday. He communicated fire officer Temaira through a taxi driver, ir I. Bennett, who was returning to ^okaanu from Taupo. Fire officer Temaira brought a portable pump and within ten minutes they had the pump connected to draw water from the lake. Seventy-five yards of hose was required to reach the farthest flames, and had to be dragged up a steep bank. Mr Gordon, who has a week-end bach at Mission Bay arrived and volunteered to help, so that by 5 a.m. the flames were under control. The area burned is only half a mile from Waiteko, popular with tourist and ! week-end fishermen.
