A letter was received from Mr Howard Hill, tendering his resignation as a member of the Board. Mr Hill has been a member for a period of eleven years. In view of Mr Hill's retirement a by-election will be necessary. In 1 connection wlth this the electoral roll will be open for inspection until the closing date, March 28th. Nomination for the vacant seat on the board will close on Aprjl 8th., and ihe election will take place on Saturday, April 26. The A.C. Baths. Mr W. A. Harding was appointed Custodian of the A.C, Baths, succeeding Mr W. H. Bennett (resigned). There were 23 applicants for the position. In reply to representations from the Ratepayers, Association on the subject of the reconstruction of the bath-houses the board ' stated: "Negotiations .are still being made to aehieve finality in this direction, since the proposed grant is the subject of discussion as to the type of baths to be installed. A request has been made, and twice repeated, for an officer of the Department to make an official m'pection, but to date nothing has been received.'
Hydro-EIectric Scheme The engineer-in-charge, Taupo Hydro-EIectric Scheme (Mr Mandeno), reported to the Board that steady progress was being made at the head works at Hatepe and also with the Power House. A clerk of works has been appointed to supervise the operations. In a letter of reply to a question on the subject from the Ratepayers Association, it was stated that "the Governing factor in this is the supply of certain materials which the Board naturally anticipates will be forthcoming to complete the project, and as everything humanly possible within the powers of the Board is being done to expedite the supply of power, the Board is still of ihe opinion that this will be available within at least the third quarter of this year. Tenders for the main and transmission lines will be called for within the next three weeks."
The Mortuary. The question of the Board's contribution to the cost of the morgue building to be erected in the Taupo Hospital Ground was further considered. The Board's previous attitude was that as the building was to be sited in the hospital ground, the responsibilities for the cost should lie with the Waikato Hospital Board. In the light of further representations by that body, it was deeided to compromise with a contribution of 25 per cent. toward the total estimated cost, £660. Other Matters. Arising out of new building construction at Haines' Corner, on the main highway, it was deeided to draw the attention of the Ministry of Works to the fact that the resulting reduction of visibility eomplained of at this point was due to the fact that the main highway itself was at fault in being otf its true line, and aetually encroaching on the footpath. Tne remedy lay in reconstructing the main highway further out toward the lake shore. The Ratepayers Association having raised the question of cleaning the land behind the Spa Farm, and a water main in Ruapehu Street, it was deeided to reply (1), "That this
question has lapsed over the period of time and the matter is being taken up with the minister concerned"; and (2), "Owing to present ioan comJmitments, the question of a general watersupply for the Town District has not been lost sight of, and when this arises the water-main referred to will be embodied in the scheme."
