TAUPO V. NATIONAL PARK Taupo visited National Park last week, and brought back with them the Lett Cup, which is a trophy presented by a National Park enthusiast for competition between National Park and Taupo teams. Last year this cup was annexed by the Park after a close struggle, but in the recent match Taupo appeared to have the game well in hand up to the last quarter of an hour when their wickets began to fall "fast and furious." The match was distinguished by an unusual hat-trick by Parkinson of National Park, whose trio of victims included one batsmen whom he clean bowled with the last ball of the first innings and again with the first ball of the second. A particularly fine bowling performance was given by Strange, whose seven wickets for nine runs in the second innings nearly equalled Loughlin's figures of nine for nine runs in the first innings against Tokaanu, and this brought his match figures to twelve wickets for thirty-one runs. In just over an hour's play before lunch National Park were all out for eighty-four. Bull with twenty seven was the only batsman able to play the bowling with any confidence, although Geary and McDowell hit with success, adding 23 for the eighth wicket, including a beautiful drive for six off Loughlin 's slower ball. Taupo commenced badly, losing Forster to the fifth ball of the innings and the third wicket fell at twenty-four when Acres was bowled for twenty. Collett in his twenty two included one splendid hook and three beautiful off drives all of which went for four. He and Strange added 43, but both left with the total still sixty seven, and Loughlin was adjudged l.b.w. at seventy three. Beale and Smith then added the 12 runs required to obtain a first innings lead. The remainder of the batsmen gave Taupo a twenty run lead; Beale being the third batsmen to be dismissed for twenty runs. Loughlin bowled unchanged in the Park's second innings and in ten overs the side was dismissed for thirty six, none of the batsmen showing any confidence although McDowell hit Loughlin for a towering six at the end of the innings. The sensation of the game was left to the end when Taupo with only sixteen runs to get to win outright, lost six wickets in getting them against steady bowling by Parkinson land Auld. Then Strange concluded a happy day for himself by making the winning hit in the fifth over, and Taupo came home the victors by six wickets. NATIONAL PARK. — First Innings : D. Gallagher, l.b.w., b.
