TAUPO TOWN BOARD
Monthly Meeting The monthly meeting of the Taupo Town Board was held on Wednesday, February 20th, there being present the chairman (Mr J. Story), Miss K. 0. Lewis and Messrs J. D. Swan, W. T. Irvine, W. H. Hill, W. G. Morris and K. E. Young. During discussion of an application by Mrs J. Sutherland for permission to have a manuka brushwood fence on her boundary granted, it was pointed out that while the board had no legal authority to forbid such fences, these, on account of the fire menace, were not considered desirable. Messrs Patience and Gabite, consulting town planners to the town board, advlsed that there should be building line restriction of 48 feet from the centre of the service lane on the Gallaghan E state fronting Tongariro Street, with a maximum coverage of 75 per cent. The recommendation was endorsed. The question of reducing the width of the service lane from 40 to 35 feet was referred to the surveyor, Mr Cheal. The Government Loans Bodrd in a letter, approved the town board's application for authority to raise an additional sum of £37,000 for the Taupo hydro electric scheme. A.C. Baths The resignation of Mr W. H. Bennett, caretaker of the A.C. Baths, was received and it was deeided to. call for applications for the position. Engineer's Report The board's engineer, Mr R. B. Price, report ed as follows: — Maintenance : General maintenance work has been continued where required and visibility has been improved on £orners by cutting back broom. 'S'ome improvement has been done on the Clark Block roads by the placing of culverts at vital points. Two culverts have been placed on each of Tui Street and Huia Street, at the Mere Road intersection to do aWay with the flooding which has occurred in the past. Soak pits and cut-off drains have been made where they will operate to the best advantage. General cleaning up has been done at the motor camp site and domain in the way of hedge trimming, ete. The grader is at present in for overhaul, and will be assembled wjien the par-ts required are to hand. Building contiol: Much time has been given to this phase of the board's aetivities, and inspections have been made of the buildings in coure of erection. Hydro-Electric Works The work at the Hatepe hydroelectric site is progressing, and three further secti(ms of the spillway have been erected. Bridge foundations have also been poured in. Much excavation work is being done at the power house site. In the absenee of a set standard of straightness to allow checking at the bush, some 330 poles are being brought in and placed in skids on Paorahape Road, and ^ufficient space is being made to allow for regular turning to assist in drying. About 200 are in position. The report was adopted.
