RESERVES AND FIRE HAZARD
Sir.— -I would like to congratulate "Pro Bone Publico" on his excellent letter. Apart from being a distinct fire menace these scrub-eovered reserves are untidy blotches on the landscape (I think I voice the opinion of the majority of residents and travellers in saying this). With the powerful machinery available today, and the number of contractors, it shoufd not be much trouble to remove the scrub from these reserves, sow in grass and plant a few attractive low-growing shrubs and graceful silver birches which are so much a part of Taupo's attraction in summer (for shade) and autumn (for colour). In this way, the fire menace would be minimised and Taupo made more beautiful by the eradication of these blemishes from her fair landscape. I am, etc., — • ONWARD, TAUPO.
