TAUPO GOLF LINKS

SECOND NINE HOLES PLANNED — Saturday, February 16. fouring the past two days Mr A. E. Southerden, well known golf course architect, and professional to the Napier Golf Club, has been in Taupo for the purpose of conferring with and advising the committee of the Taupo Golf Club in connection with the lay out of the second nine holes at the elub's links. iMr Southerden has expresse« himself as being rnost favourably impressed with the possibilities of the eourse. The present nine hole course utilises from 85 to 40 acres and this area will be increased to about 100 acres when the addition is completed. This addition of nine holes constitutes the biggest development yet undertaken by the club. For a number of yeai/s the club has enthusiastically pushed on with improvement of the present nine hole course, and great strfdes have been mdxie in the condition of greens and fairways and in beautifying the links by well planned planting. With the great increase in membership over the past itwo years the committee has felt that the extension to a full eighteen hole course should not be deferred, especially as it will take four or five years to bring the new area up to a good playing standard. At the same time it is planned to continue to improve the present nine holes. The additional area lies immediately eagtward of the present course, is gently undulating and when completed will provide a course well over 6,000 yards and of full championship length. Messrs Burrows Ltd., the contractors for breaking the new area in, have already started work, bulldozing the heavy growth of seedling pines, some up to thirty feet in height, and when this has been completed the ground will be giant disced. It is hoped that some greens may be sown this autumn and the fairways next year. In recent years an increasing number of visitors have played regularly on the Taupo Club's links, and the extension now commenced will undcubtedly greatly increase the value of what is already a great asset. to a tourist and holiday resort such as Taupo.
