REQUIEM
The King is dead ! so far by measured mile, and near in love and memories, We hear the news in airborne waves quicker than wind, Sooner perhaps than whispered word breaths thro' the English lanes, For him, no weary hours with anxious watchers waiting the last sigh; In that quiet hour before the dawn, birds in the palace garden still sleep, God came and took his hand in His — "My son, the time has come to lay the burden down, Come home with me, oh faithfullest of servants — come." The muffled drums, sonorous the organs peal, banked lillies, palls of velvet, Bowed heads of sentries resting on grounded arms — High at a palace window a weeping girl looks through her tears upon the silent crowds Her people ! So young, so happy, so short a time to be herself with joys of motherhood and thrill of journeyings. Take up the heavy sceptre ! Press the jewelled crown upon the youthful head ! We send thro' space our sorrow and our word of loyalty We will uphold you, all our strength is yours. [Long Live the Queen !] — " Kaybee," February 6, 1952.
