PUBLIC OPINION
RESERVES AND FIRE HAZARD Once again, in its due season, the question of fire hazard is* raised It is agreed that one of the most likely causes of fires is the casual motorist, who may idly flick his cigarette through the car window. With this particular individual in mind, might I suggest that some action be taken toward clearing those areas of reserve which front on the Main Highway. The two I have in mind are the area of scrub known as the "Hot Water" reserve near Waipahihi, and a triangle of dense scrub between Rifle Range and Kaimanawa Roads. A fire kindled in this latter area, with the usual south west gale behind it, could leave in its wake such a trail of destruction that Taupo, as a holiday centre, could be ruined. If Taupo cannot alford a water supply, at least elementary preeautions could be taken to protect the life and property of residents. — I am, etc., "PRO BONO PUBLICO" % AMATEUR DRAMATIC CLUB Sir, — We noted with interest the possible revival of the Taupo Play k Reading Club, but feel the time has come for a club with more satisfying aims. Hence we should be pleased to hear from any persons interested in the formation of an Amateur Dramatic Club. Not only will those who wish to tread the boards be both necessary and welcome, but also those who prefer to work behind the scenes, and, most important, anyone who has had previous experience in the production of plays. Anyone at all interested in plays please contact the undersigned. Wishing your paper every success for rapid and healthy growth. — We are, etc., MRS K. REID (Phone 131, Taupo). MRS J. S. SUTHERLAND (c/o. Tuck's, Golf Links Road, Taupo). GARBAGE COLLECTION Sir, — When is our Town Board going to supply a very necessary service — a rubbish collection ? Bi-month-ly or even quarter'ly would be of most service to those members of the community who are unable to transport their tins, etc. to the dump. Con- t sidering the small cost for which this service could be established, why has not the board acted before ? — I am, etc., "PRO BONO TAUPO" A PUBLIC NEED Sir, — I was informed, politely, the other day that a convenience for men existed among the ruins of the late Lake Hotel. With all due respect to Taupo, and Taupo 's lively Town Board, I must say that this untidy looking shed is no credit to our community. The women have been provided with a retiring room in the main street — a modern, neat looking structure. Why not a similar provision for men ? Some consideration is due to the travelling public as well as to our own citizens.— T am, etc., "PINE TREE."
