NEARLY DROWNED
PROMPT RESCUE ON WHARF — Monday January 21. About five p.m. on Sunday the prompt action of Messrs Robert Davis and W. Rogers saved Mr George Taurimu from drowning in the Waikato River near the whart Seeing Taurimu in difficultifcs in deep water Mr Rogers threw him an oar, but when this failed to reach
him Mr uBobbie" Davis jumped from the Row Boat Jetty and swam with the oar toward the struggling ma'n and drew him to the Jetty, where he was dragged out of the water. Mr Rogers commenced to apply artificial respiration and his efforts were contmued by three members of the staff of Wellington Hospital on holiday here, Misses Pat Bailey, Pam Hughes and Anne Jolland. Dr West, who had been nearby in his yacht, examined the rescued man who was suffering shock. Mr Taurimu, who is employed by the Box and Timber Co. (Taupo) Ltd., stated later that he had been playing tennis and had gone for a swim after partaking o'f ice-cream, and was seized with abdominal cramp. One fatality has already occurred in the vicinity, and , there have been several narrow escapes from drowning. A notice on the Wharf warns of the danger of swimming in this locality.
