HOTEL PROSECUTIONS Summonsed to appear before the Magistrate's Court, Taupo, on Friday, January 25, Gladys Mary Fearnley, licensee of the Terraces Hotel, Taupo, was charged on three accounts of breaches of the licencing laws: On July 21, 1951, Keeping open licensed premises whe-n They should have been closed; selling liquor after hours; and exposing liquor for -sale. Sydney Harry Edwards, barman at the Terraces Hotel, was charged that on the same date he sold liquor to certain persons at a time when they were not entitled to be supplied. Mr Harlow S.M., was on the bench. 'Sergeant Byrne conducted the case for the police, and Mr M. J. Morissy appeared for the defence. D/uring the hearing of the evirence of the witnesses called, the Magistrate, obviously unimpressed by the credibility of one of them in particular, ordered him to "get of the witness box and keep out of his sight." His worship ended by dismissing the charges. Halsey Andrews, who did not appear, was convicted of having been illegally on licensed premises, the Terraces Hotei, on June 6, 1951, and fined 20/1, costs 10/-. Leslie Joseph Nacey, convicted of supplying liquor at the Terraces Hotel on November 23, 1951, was fined £6, with costs 10/-. There was no appearance of several persons summonsed for being illegally on licensed premises, the Terraces Hotel, on the sarne date. Convictions and fines were recorded in all cases: — William Finne Palmer, 20/-, costs 10/-; Frederick Prole, 20/-, costs 10/-; Cecilia Ethel Prole, 40/-, costs 10/-; Eileen Mavis Salmon, 30/-, costs 10/-; Colin Frederick Lennan, 20/-, costs 10/-. Concerning a Rifle. A .22 Cali'bre Rifle was concerned in the prosecution of several persons who failed to appear on charges of having dealings with a firearm on August 15, 1*951 without a permit. For obtaining this particular rifle from William Marshall, without a permit on August 15 last, Mark Tawhi, was fined £5, and costs £1 8/- for devlivering it to Richard Ngawihi illegally, £3, costs 10/-; for having in his possession an unregistered /fifle, convicted with costs; William Marshall, with no permit, delivered a rifle to Tom Marshall, and was fined £5 and costs; Reginald Whare procured without a permit at .22 calibre rifle from Samuel Whare, and was fined £5 and costs, 28/-. Traffic Offences. Leon Gerrard 'Sunnex, who did not appear to answer a charge of having driv-en an over-loaded motor vehicle on November 7, 1951, was convicted and fined £6 10/-, costs 13/-. ISrancis Hartigan (no appearance) was convicted and fined 15/coi'sts 14/-, for Ihaving no drivers • license on October 31, 1951. On two charges, inefficient footbrake, and no warrant of fitness, John Te Wauru Laughton (on appear ance), was convicted and mulched in fines totalling £2, and costs 27/-. Charles Jones, on conviction, had to pay costs, 20/-, for having no warrant of fitness for his wotor vehicle; and for having no handbreak, fine 10/-, costs 10/-. Burning Without Permit. Edward Robert Hall was charged that on December 29', 1951 he burned fern and scrub at Oruanui without a permit. It was represented to the Court that while the Forest Service took a serious view of such offences, with their attendant risks of destructive conflagrations, it was felt that publicity given to the case might act as an effective deterrent, and the department would not press for a heavy penalty. A conviction was entered, with costs 10/-. Illegal Fishing. Verma Pool, for fishing without a license, on March 26, was fined £4, costs 10/-; and for fishing other than with an artif icial f ly, £2 10 / -, costs 10/-.
