TAUPO TOWN BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING At the first monthly meeting of the Taupo Town Board in- the New Year, held on Wednesday, January 16, there were present, the Chairman, Mr J. E. ;Story, and the following members: [Miss K. 0. Lewis, Messrs J. D. Swan, W. T. Irvine, W. H. Hill, W. G. Morris and K. E. Young. Advice was received from the Valuer-General confirming that the revaluation of the Taupo Town District should take effect as at March 31, 1953. There was some discussion on the subject of the provision of a mortuary to meet the requirements of the police, medical officers, and the Coroner. There had been exchanges of news with the Waikato Hospital Board on the proposal that the mortuary should be provided as part of the building programme now in progress for a Casualty Ward at the Taupo Hospital, the question at issue being the responsibility for the cost The board finally decided to convey to the Waikato Hospital Board its opinion that as the mortuary would be part of the Taupo Hospital precincts the whole cost should be borne by the controlling authority — the Hospital Board. The reconditioning of the A.C. Baths, which has been a standing question before former boards, was advanced. a further step by a decision to amend the proposal adopted previously to provide five eubicles and a swimming bath, to 8 eubicles and new swimming bath. The eubicles will be 10' x 6' in area. Plans will be prepared accordingly. Mrs Ernest Young1 and Mrs A. Wehringo attended the meeting as a deputation to urge the Taupo CemOtary. They suggested that steps should be taken to rnake the general cemetery lay-out confine to the modern idea of lawns and gardens. The board accorded the speakers a sympathetic hearing and assured them that the question raised would receive careful consideration. Engineer's Report. The Board's Engineer, Mr R. B. Price, reported on the period ended January 15 last as follows:— General maintenance has been earried out on all works within the board's area. The scrub-cutter was engaged for one week cutting back overhanging growth, and all available labour is being diverted to provide better visibility at intersections. The lupin growth along the foreshore has been hand-pulled, and if this is done again next summer the beach should be fairly clear. Long grass on the Lake Terrace has becm cut with. the motor-mower, and some time is being given to cleaning up the miotor camp following a reasonably busy season. Arrangements have been made to put the grader in for overhaul during February. The Power Scheme. Much time, reported the engineer, has been given to matters in connection with the hydro-power scheme. The poles to be supplied by Messrs Neilson and Nicol are cut and await the formation of a lorry track, when they will be delivered on skids on the road side. As they are delivered they will be checked for length and sizes, and marked. In the meantime they are drying out in the sun. At the darn site the contractors are progressing with the excavations at the power house site, and the excavation for the main span bridge abutments is ready for concrete. The cut-off wall on the northern bank is faeed with rock as per plan and ready for timbering to take concrete. The first section of the cut-off wall on the southern side is completed and most of the anchor rods on the line of the spillway are grounded in places. Considering the rains experienced the access road i£ in fair order and except under extremely wet conditions is negotiable at all tinnes. It is suggested that an early visit to the works might be made by the members of the Board, as the general outllne of the dam cari now be seen.
