Combination Automobile And Plane Developed By The Army
Three new types of non-combat aircraft designed to> speed the movement of men and supplies in battle zones, are being developed for use by the United States Army. One of these support vehicles is a combination automobile and aircraft. A single-engine, closed cabin machine, it has wings that can be mounted or taken off in five to seven minutes. Known as a "fleep" it wculd enable a pilot to ny over enemy lines, return to any unprepared landing field, take off his wings and drive to headquarters to report his observations. The experimental model built to Army specifieatlons, is based on a similar "amphibian" developed for civilian use after World War II. Also on order by the Army is a "eonvertiplane." This will rise and descend vertically like a helicopter and also will have "considerable forwarcl i speed" like an airplane, the Army 1 explains. The first model will carry two passengers. j The third new craft is a helicopter that will cairy a load weighing 25 ; tons, compared to two or four tons carried by present helicopters. This new machine would be able to trans- ! port one of the huge tanks used by the U.S. Army.
