SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 23.
Witli heurts resolyed, and hauds prepared The blessings xvk enjoy to guard,'
We would bewanting in our duty by witholding from the public a Government order published 011 the muster day of the present month. This order intimates that unless the military settlers can produce certificates showiag that tlieir arms and accoutrenients have been returned to themilitarystore their Crown Grants will be witheld until the sutu of £7 10s, in each default is paidsto re'ctify the loss sustained on the part of the Government We quite concur with the precautiou exercised by the Government for the protecticn of its property, but we object unhcsitatingly to tlie tinie dctermined by tliem to exerci.se thesr prerogative as it niilitates against the iliterests of the public who have purcliased land from the military settlers. At the tettniliation ofthree year's servicc the military SLttlers accoriling to their conditions were cutitled to a crown grant for their lands. The . public purchased land on this presiimpti n, and are they to be the sufferers of a post morteiu examination issued by the Government ? The pubiic never heard of tliese conditions until this month, and if a default occurs in their purcliascs it is attributable solely to the delinquency of the Goverument and not to the military settler. The conditions of enlistment j ro\e this totlie public satisfaciion and our Goverument are exeveising a prerogative here whicli will sliow eventually that tliey existiu a particular mauner to oppress our district. Again we objeft to tbe Government rnulcting tbe public purchasers of military settler's land because the vendor has not hitherto complied with a recent order. Tnblic interest rcquires that pr. cisely such talent should be emploved in the various offices f the Government as m*y be necessaiy to insure the discharge of the duties of each office in the best possible nianner. Many of these offices can osily be disharged successfully by the fir.st order of huanui talent, cultivated by learning and discipline, and directed by incorruptible integrity. That this order ha; beea coaiplied with by our admiuistiators, we cahnly deny. For if the Goveruotent wisbed to protoct the public they would
intimate to the military settlers " you will not get your land scrip until you give in your arms, &c., to the military store Tlien they could mulct the scrip and title to a crown grant and not the crown grant is an unjust authorization. We are justified before tlre public to quesfion this new arrangement and to invite purchasers oi land from the military settlers at Tauranga to clairn a formal rcpcal of this order according to our reasoning, t.therwise' our difficulties are hcgun ancw against us by the Government.
