SATURDAY, APRIL 20.
Tiie time is drawing near wheri tlie lst Waikato Regiment will be a tliing of tbe past : but of tbe 700 men formerly drawins'G overn ment . pay in Te Papa onlyj^tiow remain, and of these numbeH^ire taking tbeir discharge daily. It is a matter to be regretted tbat sucli a disinclinalion prevails among tbe men to settle and cultivate 'their farm sections. We are aware tbat tlie tlirejKtening aspect of native affairs bas driven numbers away from our shores, wbo would otherwise have gladly availed themselves of the opportunity to settle in Xnqpinga : nor we wonder at it ; .but even Before there was any actual danger to be a'pprehended from tbe incursions of the fanatics. tbe same dis-
inchnation was evinced. Colonel Haultain before be left here for Wellington, gave strict orders, that tliose men wlio had not already drawn tbeir land, were to do so, and be struck off pay as quiekly as possible. Altbougb the bonorable gentleman conld not but be aware tbat tbe said land is in the immediate vicinity of the rebels, and tbat the surveyors had a covering party of Arawas while at work on it. Of course, land in such a position as this is about as valuable as an estate in the mbuntains of tbe moon and equally practicable to get at iu the present state of affairs : but thefe are some wbo drew tbeir land in a comparatively practical position, and we fully expected to see them turning the wilderness into a garden On this point we must certainly confess we have been very much disapppinted there being only four wbo are making any sbow of cultivation at present : but we trust tliat numbers, seeing the success of tbe of tbeir niore enterprising bretbren, will return and follow in tbeir footsteps. No doubt if those refractory impediments to our progress, the Hauhaus were removed, Tauranga" would not be backward in its marcb of civilisation, possessing as it does a splendid liarbor and rich land, replete with every natural convenience sufficient to make it one of tbe finest places in New Zealand. Man it is true bas done little for it yet, but we
trust tbe surrounding country will - yet yield plenty to tbe rejoicipg cry of thousands. Let us then be up and doing, and not sink into lrredemable apatby, and look On ruin and stagnation as inevitable and success and prosperity as impossible. It is the darkest hou'r before tbe dawn. We have endeavored to christianise the Maoris and behold ingratitude the most gross, and fanaticisrn almost approaching to \ idolitary 1 Be the result then on their own beads, and let them be ; driven before tbe irresistable current of christianity and civilisation.
Bed is not tbe place to get ricb. Those wbo wish to press forward in the worlds race must rise early, in order to leave their faculties sharp and unclouded. Much sleep causes Skpaviness both of mind and bodyMnd is no friend of good temper.; Wben a person rises early and liaving been in the fresh niorning air for a time returns to his room how tbe difference strikes him ; the darkened windows, tbe tossed bed, and tbe closeness of tbe atmospbere grate unpleasantly on his tierves, and be is faiu to escape once more from the bouse to enjoy the beauties of nature so plentifully nrovided by bis Creator.
A little more sleep and a little more slumber irioans the sluggard as be tnrns over • and so he sleeps on, regardless tbat tbe day is waning fast, and tbat be ougbt to _ liave risen bonrs sinCe. A hasty toilette. ■ a hurried, unthinking thanksgiving to bis Maker, and, he defqends beavy and unrefresbed to si&teh a few moutbfulls of broakfast. | The day thus badly begun, Jails . not to bring . trouble and annoyauce to the. sluggard, whosoeverbe may be. Those ,who nigbtly enjoy a sound sleep, wbo' hardly awake from the time of retiring till they are roused in a semi-lethargic state in tbe morning, are not balf as conscious of the great blessing they tbus enjoy, as is tbe poor invalid, wbo, tossing to and fro on an uneasy couch, anxiously watches for tbe o-atbering light at the window tbat anno'qnces tbe approach of day,
'Tis w'-i'en tlie restless child of sorrow , \ Wiitcliing the wished for rising mo'rrow His couch fofe'goes And' 'Weks, ,'midst scenes as sweet so mild, To sooth those pangs so keen, so wild, Of hopeless woes. Tiius' ylf St tbe one hardly knows the absffce of, the other, (if be be rich,) would give tbe balf of his fortune for. A regular, aud systematic hour of rising, braces tbe nerves and infuses a degree of iife and energy into tbe system otherwise not felt. Tbe farmer who rises by candleiigbt of a cold winter -"morning, and superintends bis work till breakfast time. partakes of the _ rough meal provided for him with a much keener relish tban does tbe latc riser, who, paper iu band sits languidly, liaving but little appetite for the goods ' so temptingly placed before him. I would then urge such of our readers as are addicted to the slotliful habit of sleeping tbe bright morning hours away, to mend tbeir . ways with all speed, and take a
lesson from nature, wbere everything. even from the smallest flower condemns a practice at once injurious and unnecessary. An hours dig in tbe garden, or quietread would be better botb for mind and body. If tbe practice be found difficult to | leave off at first, then let them blgin by degrees, a little earlier every day till the right time be attained, and tbe benefit tbus derived will far exceed any temporary difficulty in the attaining of it. \
