On Wednesday evening last the ladies of the Presbyterian Church gave the young people of the Church a *• Spoon Evening.” A very pleasant time was spent in games of every description, ani c mpetitions, etc. The most humorous item of the evening was the Chop stick competition, in which all joined. In this the prize was won by the persou who succeeded in picking up most peas in five minutes. Mr Payze won the prize, haviDgp.icked up 168 peas. Another interesting item was a competition in arithmetic, in which Mrs Axford gained the prize. During the evening supper was handed round, and alt praise is due to the ladies who prepared the good things. About three dozen spoons wore collected, and no doubt these will be found very useful for future soirees. At the close of the evening all returned home after spending a very enjoyable time.

11 is with regret that we have to record the death of Mr John Vulgar, an old and respected resident of Paeroa, who passed away at lrs residence, Te Aroha Road Paeroa, on Wednesday last. For a loDg time, Mr Vulgar carried on busiuess as a butcher, but of late years he has been living in retirement. Mr Vulgar, who hud attained the good age of 73 years, leaves a widow and a grown up family, most of whom are residents in the Paeroa distiiet. Sincere fympatl y 6 felt for the widow aud family in their sad affliction.
