TENNIS.

OPENING OF THE NEW COURTS AT TURANGAOMOANA. The ladies and gentlemen who had striven so hard for a successful opening on December 2nd., were not disappointed in the weather, which, although it looked decidedly threatening, yet gained the heartful thanks of all by keeping fine for this special occasion. The courts were opened by Miss Gat land, of Turangaomoana, our untiring Secretary, who “ drove the first ball ” in real, good style. Afternoon tea was served at 2.30 p.ra., all doing ample justice to the many good things provided by the fair damsels of the district. By this time both the courts (for our little district can boast of two courts now) were in full swing, and withstood well the test put upon them, this being a silent compliment to the enthusiastic working bee for their excellent workmanship. Mr B Garland, speaking on behalf of Mr Boulevt, the Chairman of the Tennis Committee, in a very short, but humorous speech, thanked all for their kind attendance there that afternoon and hoped that they would all thoroughly enjoy themselves. Mr Garland then had much pleasure in formally declaring the court* open for play. During the afternoon some 150 people were present, and the sight presented was a very pretty one. Visitors from the Matamata, Gordon, Te Aroha, and Cambridge courts were present. Towards tha close of the day, when the players were beginning " to get their eye in,” some very good exhibitions of the game were given. A men’s four, Messrs Maingay and Garland versus Messrs Banks and Stockdale, proved to be very exciting and was much appreciated by the onlookers. After a very keen struggle, which lasted till du c k, the former pair proved to be slightly superior, although throughout the play seemed to be of a very even character. Some very good “ rallies ” were indulged in. While everything was in full swing the tennis folk had the rare privilege of cheering a bridal couple who were en ronte to Te Aroha, leaving this place on tfipir honeymoon for Sydney next day. Light refreshments served again at 6.30 p.m., ended what was considered by all to be a most enjoyable and successful day’s outing. We hope that this will prove to be just the beginning of many such pleasant outings.
