Convent High School Concert
A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION The Public Hall was crowded to overflowing on Wednesday evening Wt, when the annual musical and iratna'io entertainment by the pupils of the Convent High Schoil took ph oe. , Quite. a number of persons were unable to gain admittance owing to the crowded state of the h ill, and were compelled to reluctantly i eturii h une. It would have taken a building twice the size of the present structure to have provided comfortable seating accommodation for those desirous of witnessing the Wednesday evening’s entertainment. However, notwithstanding the packed condition of tho seats, and the atmospheric unpleasantness prevalent, those present spent a most enjoyable time. Considering the stage and dressing accommodation the wonder in that the conceit proved such an unqualified success. Those responsible for getting things in order behind the scene must have worked like Trojans, and their rft'orts were well rewarded. The way in which the children, from almost toddlers to young girls and boys almost out of their teens, played tli- it- respect ve parts, on the pianos’, violins, <tc., was unniistakeable proof of the sound tuition received at the hands of the Sisters. Tho followingprogramsue was gone through without a hitch, frequent rehearsals, doubtless being responsible for the clock-work precision iu which the vari: us items passed off’: —
Piano irio, “ Orphee,” (Offenbach), Misses Nona Stanley, Dorothy Johnson, Eileen Alagill, Ina Jackson, P. Bygrave and K. Peat; chorus, “ Erin, the Tear and ihe smile in Thine Eyes,” girl pupils ; Country Dance, by members of the Dancing Class, viz., Alisses D. Edwards, G Mclndoe, E. Hopkins, G. Maxwell, F. Fitzgerald, E. Magill, R. Johnson, L. Elynn, AI. Gavin, and K. MeGrucr ; trio, “ Sulut d’ Amour ” (Elgar), Alisses Isa Frith and Nona Stanley (pianos) and Alisses Jean Wigg and Ethel Hopkins (violins) ; song, “ The Kazoo Band,” Alasters J,, Peter, Pat. and D. Geano.v, J. Alagill, J. Alaekle, J. Gavin, W. Donovan, and Rongo Pilling ; song. “ Some Young Quakeresses,” pupils ; piano solo, “ Rondo Tiirc ” (Steibclt), AIUs Doris Koesing and Master Rongo Pilling ; trio, “ La Traviata,” Alisses O. Stanley, E. and N. AlcSweeuev, AI. Patterson, D. McGlashan, and A Ryan ; song, “ Aterrily We Roam,” pupils ; piauo solo, Alisses D. Edwards and D. Chulton ; “ Iriih Jig,” Dancing Class ; duet (2 I pi mos) “ Russian Fete Dance,” Alisses] Fitzgerald, Gavin, Geaney and Flynn ; Sailor’s Hornpipe, Alasters Rongo Pilling and John Alaekle ; solo (two pianos) “ Yalse ” (Chopin), Alissos Fitzgerald and Alcludoe ; song, “ Dolly’s Singing Lesson,” Mas*or J. Alaekle. The pianoforte and violin playing by the pupils are deserving of special mention, and the pupils are a credit to the Sisters of Aleroy, who are responsible for their tuition ; the item by Aliss Doris Kecsing and Alaslcr Rongo Pilling, being especially good, considering the age of the performers. The several items by members of the Dancing Cla : s, were well rccei.ed and loudly applauded. The members of the “ Kazoo Band,” fairly brought down the house, by their playing and singing, and responded to an imperative encore. Master John Alaekle, judging by his exhibition in the several items in which he took part, is a born comedian, and his acting alone was well wotth the price charged for admission. After the conclusion of the musical portion of the programme, the picturesque and amusing cantata “ Tho Rose of Joy,” was staged, and those entrusted with the leading parts acquitted themselves very creditably. The cast of characters were : Queen Cynthia, Miss Ethel Hopkins ; Her Alagician, Abracadabra, Miss Frances Fitzgerald ; Court Jester, Mas'er Joliu Alaekle ; Queen’s Page, Master Rongo Pilling ; Dragon, Alaster Walter Donovan, The array of Kuights, Ladies, Fairies and Sunbeams, most gorgeously attired, gave a very pretty and pleasing stage affect. The accompanists during the evening wore:—Piauo: Misse3 Gavin, E. Johnson, K. Hogan, K. McGrner, Grace Mclndoe ; violins : Alisses King, Hopkir.s, Bovett, Ivy Gavin and Master J. Patterson.
