MINING

At Wairongomai the several mines at work are giving most encouraging prospects. In the Bendigo m ine the width of the reef in the leading stope is 9ft. and the manager states that the ore looks well. The outlook for the Pick and Dish claim atTe Aroha augurs well, and payable gold-bearing stone has been taken out. We would not be surprised to see a number of men at work on this ground at no distant d- ';e. •

Mr oansen’s claim is situated in a likely spot to prove remunerative. Murphy’s syndicate have, for the time being, abandoned work in the tunnel, and turned its attention to another part of the claim. The tunnel is in about 440 ft, and while some of the Syndicate feel confident that if it was continued a payable reef would be met with ere long, others, again, favour giving another part of the mine a trial. In past years some r ch gold has been picked up in the gully below the mine, but the reef could never be found. Practical miners have often been heard to remark that a very rich reef is hidden somewhere in the vicinity of what was in the early days known as “ The Old Prospector’s Claim. ” Whether this prophesy is correct or not remains to be seen.
