LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Hundreds of visitors spent the King’s Birthday in Te Aroha. The Domain presented quite an animated appearance. The croquet, tennis and bowling lawns were fully occupied most of the day. Numbers took launches and spent an enjoyable time on the picturesque Waihou river; others endeavoured to catch the wily trout; while not a few ascended the bald spur and trig station, feasting their eyes upon the exquisite view obtained therefrom; A few from the dry area made exhibitions of themselves by unseemly hehavour in the street, falling prostrate on the asphalt, etc.

An amusing incident occurred recently at a theatre in Lancashire. In a play called “High and Mighty” the heroine has to die, her death being brought about by a villian, who shoots her with a pistol. At the critical moment the weapon missed fire; but the actor was equal to the emergency, and declaimed at once : “Die, tlj.en, the first victim of smokeless powder !”

LET? IT BE KNOWN The widest publicity' ghpuld pe given to the fact that summer diairlicea and dysentery can be cured by the judicious ÜBt i of Chamberlain’s Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea £«medy. A local resilient (says <he Tamm’ i Daily New<) claims tu have discovered a new and unfailing euro and preventive of potato blight and the mixture he recommends is worth st rting, if only for its novelty. It is nothing more than a coir coction of deck roots. He has found that the water in which these roots have been boiled arrests the'progress of the blight. Last year the only rows of potatoes he saved were those sprayed with the mix' ture, and already this season he has proved its value in a crpp where the blight has just made its appearance. A number of gardeners in in Ins neighbourhood are trying the mixture. It is thought the bitterness of the dockroot has something to do with its service. If this is so it opens the way for further experiment with substances of pronounced bitter qualities.
