London, November 9 The Government are hopeful of a compromise with the House of Lords on the Town Planning Bill, and also on the Irish Land Bill. Mr Birrell, chief secretary for Ireland, is negotiating with the Irish unionists con* cerning the congested districts. Many concessions are being offered by Mr Birrell in the hope of saving the Bill.

The Finance Bill has been read a first time in the House of Lords. The “ Times ” states that at the second reading stage, the official opposition amendment will be moved ensuring the rejection of the Bill on the ground that the country should be consulted before passing it.
