THAMES NEWS.

DEATH OF MR C. SHAW.

VICTIM OF A STRANGE DIS* EASE.

General regret will be expressed at the death of Mr Chas. Edward Shaw, aged 25 years (son of Mr Fred Shaw, our well-known townsman) which occurred at the Hospital on Saturday morning. The deceased, who was very popular in the district, was attacked some months back with a strange disease called leuococythemia, which medically is defined as one in which the blood presents a great increase in the white corpuscles. It is stated that there is no known cure of the disease, which inevitably causes the death of the afflicted one. This is said to be the second case known in New Zealand, and the sixth case that has come under the observation of medical science. The late Mr Shaw suffered intense agony, which was borne with true courage. The progress of the disease was temporarily arrested, and some relief obtained, but subsequently the malady reasserted itself and towards the end hearing, sight, and *then speech failed. The deceased, whe was a Past Grand of the Local Charles Bruce Lodge, had been an inmate of the Thames Hospital for the past 'ten weeks, and hia popularity was evidenced by the large number of friends who called upon him.

The. large and representative gathering at the funeral of the late Mr Charles E. Shaw on Sunday after* noon (the Oddfellows’ and general public being present in large numbers) tended to show the esteem in which deceased was held, and also was a tribute of sympathy to the relatives in. their sad bereavement. The remains were interred at the Tararu Cemetery. The Rev. Dr. O’Callaghan conducted a very impressive burial service, while that on behalf of the Oddfellows was delivered by P.G. Bro. W. J. McCormick, of the Loyal Charles Bruce Lodge, deceased himself having iLeen a Past Grand Master of the named. f s=—;
