Te Aroha Tennis Club.
OPENING OF SEASON
A DIO crowd of visiting local tennis players assembled in the Te Aioha Do ■ main grounds yesterday afternoon, when the official opening of the Courts took place. Representatives were present from all the country clubs, and several were present from Auckland. The visitors wore well looked after by the ladies, who provided afternoon tea. The weather was perfect and a most onjoynble afternoon resulted. A large maique, kindly lent and erected by tbe Tourist Department, was much appreciated by tbe members of the Club and visitors. The President, Mr G. P. McQirr, in opening the courts, said he had great pleasure in extending a warm welcome to all their visitors and guests; they were fortunate in being able to welcome them under such glorious weather conditions, and they were pleased to see so many familiar faces. Many of them had met before on both tbe To Aroha courts aud on their own courts, and had fought ought many a hard game. He trusted that they would spend a pleasant and enjoyable afternoon, aud that it would be the forerunner of many gatherings of a similar nature during the season. He was pleased to bo able to state that the membership of the Te Aroha Club was rapidly growing, and that they possessed many good players among both the ladies and gentlemen. Many of his hearers were blushing, and it was not therefore difficult to single out those players to whom he particularly referred. At the same time, from all accounts they had of some of the country clubs, Te Aroha would have to look closely to its laurels. The Te Aroha club was lqoking forward to a good season, and he felt confident theiy ftopes would be materialised. They were also looking forward to welcoming their visitors to Te Aroha on many fntmo occasions. He was not an aotive tennis player himself, having reached that mature age at which it was considered one should take up bowls, but at the same time he took a very keen interest in the game, and he considered tennis one of the finest games in existence. He was pleased to inform them that in connection with the new asphalt courts, the Tourist Department intended straight away to asphalt the sandy area at each end right to the barriers, and to thoroughly drain the surroundings. This would condqce greatly tq the comfort and coqycqieqce of tftk cqupts, and fte wns sqre that players would greatly appreciate the action of the Department in studying their needs. He noticed many looking very impatient and anxious to commence, so would not take up any mere of their time, but would wish tbe respective clubs present a happy and prosperous season. Amid cheers for the visitors, Mrs McGirr played the first ball across the net and the season was duly declared open for IPO9-10.
The übiquitous pbotogropher was much in evidence—two cameras being at work, and a number of snapshots of the various stages of the opening were apparently taken.
