Piako County Council.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the above body took place in the Council Chambers, Te Aroha, on Tuesday last, when Jthere were present :—Messrs W. P. Chepmell (chairman), J. Brady, W. T. Hughes, J. B. Thomas, T. Bellamy and Chas. Manuel.

Minutes read andiconfirmed, and inward and outward correspondence dealt with.

Fees—- - Cr Manuel expressed the opinion ''that auctioneers should be made to pay their license fees to the local bodies governing the districts in which they do their business. At all events the fees should be equally distributed.—Other Councillors were of the same opinion.—lt was resolved on the motion of Cr Manuel, seconded by Cr Thomas, that the Clerk write to local bodies interested asking for their co-operation in this matter. —Page’s Road — Decided that Supervisor prepare plans and specifications and that tenders be called. Tenders are also to be called for Baker’s road. —Concrete v Wood — In response to Supervisor Johnson’s request, it was resolved on the motion of Cr Manuel, that he be allowed to experiment with one set of concrete piles instead of wood piles as at present used throughout the County.

—Dog Tax Collector — ’•' It was decided to write and ascertain if Kiely intends to carry out his duties as dog tax collector. —Next Meeting— ‘ The date of next meeting falls on Monday, Bth November, at 2 p.m. —Waiorongomai Tramway— On the motion of Cr. Hughes it was decided to employ wages men to place the Waiorongomai tramway 4n a good state of repair. v > —Prolonging Contracts—*£r. Manuel said that contractors should be made to start work at once, as the whole community is inconvenienced by the delay. The Supervisor should be backed up by the .whole Council in this matter. All local bodies were guilty of leaving their work till the winter set in, instead of taking every advantage of the fine weather. He trusted the Piako County Council would not be accused of delay any more. He considered that if con'; tractors neglected to start at time specified, the Supervisor be instructed to take the job from them. The Chairman said that contractors should be informed that if the work is not finished in the time specified, the penalties would be strictly enforced.—lt was resolved on the motion of Cr. Manuel “ That specifications be strictly adhered to, especially Clause 7.” —Supervisor’s Report — It was resolved to call tenders for work recommended in the Supervisor’s report. —Forming Road— The Clerk was instructed to write informing Mr McFarlane that £lO is available for forming the road.

—Flax—

to accept Borrie’s offer at f royalty of five shillings per ton.

—A Deputation— Messrs Jones and Scott, who have purchased part of Mr Maroney’s property, asked for a road of some 30 or 35 chains. They have no outlet until such time as the road is put in. The Chairman said Mr Maroney had previously petitioned Council for this work.—The deputation said that, including Mr Clothier, they had already bought some 3,000 acres.—The Chairmanremarked that the Council had made up estimates for the year, and unless the deputation were willing to contribute towards the work the Council could not [do it, as they had no money.—Cr. Bellamy said he had been over the proposed road, and it would not be a big job.—The Chairman moved that if the parties interested contributed £2O the work be proceeded with. —Cr. Bellamy said he did not consider the parties should be asked for anything ; it was not fair. —The motion was put to the meeting and carried, —Steamer Landing— A letter was received from the Northern Steamship Coy., pointing out that sand, etc., from the construction works at the foot of Kenrick-street wa§ filling in the landing opposite the Coy.’s shed, and preventing the steamer getting as closQ.mto the wharf as formerly. Th6*Uhairman said the matter of silting washing away from the works at the new traffic bridge had nothing to do with the Piako Council. It should be referred to the Borough Council. With reference to the willow nuisance he (the Chairman) was under the impression that the river came under the restriction of the Thames Harbour Board. —New Deviation— On the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Cr. Bellamy, it was resolved that steps be taken to make deviation from McFarlane’s. —Timber— The prices for timber from Barnett were handed to the Supervisor to compare with others. —Drainage Trouble.— McDonald, who recently acquired Mr Burke’s property at Waihou, wrote re drain.—Cr Bellamy: To clean out the top end would only make it worse for Mr McDonald. Cr Thomas: It is no use touching the drain till the Ohinemuri County Council have done their portion.—ln reply to the Chairman the Supervisor said there was a good deal of traffic Along the road. The Chairman: The work would*have to be done under the

Public Works Act as a Drainage Board.—Left to Supervisor and riding member to report at next meeting.

—Alexandra Road— The question of Messrs Stark Bros. Road was left in the hands of the Riding member and foreman to report at next meeting. —A Request— Mr S. McKibben waited on the Council and applied for the right to lease the piece of land, about 5 acres, formerly leased to Mrs Sweeney. — Resolved to have the land well fenced, and applications be called, returnable at next meeting. —A Complaint— Mr Horne wrote complaining of a nuisance on the Elstow Road.— Cr. Bellamy said that Mr Horn is one of the creamery suppliers, and part of the offence came therefrom. —Cr. Thomas said that the Direct tors bad already paid 5s per chain for cleaning out ten chains of the drain. —In reply to the Chairman Cr. Bellamy said the drain went out the Piako into the Ohinemuri County—Left to Supervisor to inspect and report. —Licensing Expenses— A lletter from Hamilton Borough re licensing expenses was referred to the Matamata County Council.

—Katikati Track —

A letter was read from the Katikati Road Board re the above track. —Cr. Manuel said Thompson’s track answered all requirements, being of a better grade.—Cr. Thomas : Council had enough to do to keep one track open. —Letter res ceived.

—Correspondence.— Letter was received from the Northern Land League. From Mining Association re water right. From Public Works Department re Waiorongomai tram and track. — Grant accepted, particulars to be sent as requested. From Mr W. H. Herries, M.P., stating he would support Stanley Road application. From Counties Association re accident insurance to the effect that it would be placed before the Executive at its next meeting. From Messrs Herries and Greenslade, M.’sP., stating that they would use their influence re Diagonal Road application.
