The Budget.
London, October 10. Mr Lloyd George, in a speech at Newcastle, said :—“ The more irresponsible featherheads among the Lords want to throw the Budget out. Poor Lord Lansdown, who is in the creaking old ship, and with the mutinous old crew, has got to sail through the narrows with one eye on the weather glass and the other on the forecastle. The real. sailing master is the chief Tory Whip, who is now trying to decide whether it is safe to shoot the albattoss. The Budget’s fate depends on the reports from the country/’ Concluding, the Chancellor said : “ The Lords majyM decree a resolution, but the will direct it. If the Constitution be torn to pieces issues will be raised which the Lords little dream of. Who made ten thousand people owners of the soil ? Who is responsible for the scheme whereby one engages in grinding labour, and ekeing out a precarious existence, while another is rolling in unearned luxury ? These questions will be asked, and the answer will be charged with peril for the order of things which the peers represent.” The speech contained an attack similar to that at Limehouse upon landlords.
The Chancellor instanced the large*' ness of the profits upon the land sold for railways and municipalities and the coal royalty. Mr Lloyd George, addressing an overflow meeting of 6000, said he was glad the people were with the Go* vernment in the fight. He had feared at the start that they might not realise iu time how deeply their interests were bound up with the Budget.
