Tie Defence Conference.

Melbourne, September 31. Mr Deakin in referring to published correspondence between the Premier of New Zealand (Sir J. Ward), and the Australian Delegates at the Defence Conference, regarding the combined fleet, said he took it that ships in New Zealand waters would necessarily co'-operate with Australia in time of war, and probably also on occasions in time of peace. At the same time he ventured to assume that the Australian naval force supported the Commonwealth and Dominion m proportion to the population or shipping as the case might be, it would probably be found to furnish the best guarantee of protection toi our ocean highways and shores.
