BLOCKING THE STREETS.

(To the Editor.) Sir,- In yorr last issue there appeared two letters signed respectively “ Ratepayer ” and “ Chamber of Commerce.’* 'The latter gentleman has had pride of place given to his letter, you, sir, deeming this subject of such vital public interest that you place it amongst ithe cables. Now, I think this question has been thrashed out—say before the flood, and I think as this matter affects the livelihood of our stable keepers it should beallowed to drop. It does not say much for our intelligence as a community that the only question that is put indirectly to our Council candidates is : “ ira you in favour of blocking our streets ? I have my shop near a stable and have suffered no harm from the fact cf having the vehicles on the street. How many farmers would drive in if they had to Pay.s»y Is 6d or 2s for a stand instead of ithe moderate price that at present rules.—l am, etc.,

Thomas Donovan.

THE COUNCIL ELECTION.

To the Editor. Sir,— -I notice that a‘ suggestion was thrown out by one of your readers that the candidates nominated for Municipal honours take the Hall and deliver orations to the Burgesses. This sounds very nice, but most of us know that it is not always the best talker that makes the best worker—some people are gifted—born orators, in fact. Doubtless Messrs Stanley, Mclndoe. and Spence will fight the election out m an amicable manner. The Burgesses know pretty well their respective abilities, and on Tuesday next will put in the best man. The latter gentleman, however, does not appear to have sufficient time to attend to the duties of Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce ; and how on earth he will find time to carry out the work of a Councillor, I know not. —I am, etc.

Ratepayer.
