Death Duties

London, September 14. Clause 40 of the Finance Bill, enacting increased death duties, was strenuously opposed iu the House of Commons, and a closure had to be applied, when the Clause was carried by 192 votes to 95. Me Balfour emphasised the danger of taxing capital in order to meet the annual expenditure. The Government maintained the proposals were fair and just, and not unreasonable in comparison with tho resources of the country.
