Presentation.
At Eotorua the other evening a very pleasant function took place in the / works yards, Tourist Department, when Mr Li. Birks, engineer-in-chargc, was presented by the whole of the ememployees with one of Mr Cutler’s panoramas of Botorua, beautiful'y mounted by Mr Parkerson, also with four other pictures, equally well mounted by tho same artist. The presentation was made to Mr Birks as a wedding present, but from a variety of causes was somewhat belated. Mr W. Hill in making the presentation said that it was somewhat behind the occasion ; but thd delay had been caused by a change in the character of the presentation, rendered necessary by the circumstances. It was intended at first to present Mr Birks with mounted photos of groups of the employees in the various branches ; but from a variety of causes this was found impracticable, and it was decided that the presentation should take its present form. Mr Hill went on to refer to the amicable relations existing between Mr Birks and the staff, and in the good work done by him. On behalf of the employees he wished Mr and Mrs Birks a long, happy, and prosperous life. Applause. Messrs Reynolds, Fitzgerald and Brownlie also spoke. In thanking the employees for their beautiful gift, Mr Birks said that he and his wife would cherish it as one of the most precious of their wedding presents, not only from its intrinsic beauty and value, but also for the extrinsic value of its associations with Rotorua and the members of the staff, with whom bis relations had always been pleasant, and in whom he had found a body of willing helpers in the work being carried on here by the department. He thanked r them very heartily for their kindness, which would be deeply appreciated by his wife and himself. The meeting broke up with three cheers for Mr Birks, and with musical honours.
