Local exhibitors were very successful at the Winter Show, Mr W. Escott securing first for cobs of maize); Mr J.‘ B. Starkey, four firsts and two seconds ; Mr Milsoni, one first in the game classes ; Dr. Seville was successful with a game puliet, first and second for Houdans. first for Muscovy drake, and first for Muscovy duck, and first and second for Pekin bantams cock and hen ; Mrs Seville was awarded first pyi:ge for collection of home raadp §\yeets, and special third for cocoaput ice,
The drying wind and frosty weather of the past few days has much improved the condition of the roads.
After the passing of the traction engine along Studholme-street on Monday, a hole was noticed in the road, where the drain crosses the road near Mr Wallace’s shop. On examination it was found several of the pipes were broken and a large amount of material was washed away. Foreman Newman was soon on the job, and the work of putting in new pipes is approaching completion. Settlers who have not already chaffed their stacks are making another start, Mr Butler is moving out with his trac tion engine and chaffcutter to Messrs Irwin and Reay’s on Monday, taking advantage of the improved condition of he road.
