Volunteer Notes.

The Piako Mounted Rifles, as at present constituted, is one of the best volunteer companies in the North Island. The men take a lively interest in their drill, and we are pleased to state, paying more attention to shooting. The P.M.R. intend holding a Social in the Public Hall on Friday, August 6 th, which will doubtless be well patronised and prove a great success. During the afternoon of the 6th of August, the Pilling Shield will be competed for. The officers of the P.M.R. intend paying a visit to Matamata about the 28th inst., for the purpose of stirring up the young fellows to a sense of their duty, and endeavouring to form a troop in connection with the P.M.R. We trust their efforts will be rewarded.
