At the last meeting of the abovo Council the members present were : Messrs Grace (chairman), Corbett, Crosby, Franklin, Lloyd, Laughlin, Marrinan, Nathan, and Strange. —Waitoa Drains. — The Engineer wrote as fellows. in regard to Nos. 1 and 9 Drains, Waitoa Estate :—A settler on the Waitoa Estate wrote at last meeting requesting the Council to clear out the above drains. Having inspected same, I consider it only necessary to do No. 1 drain, the other being sufficiently clear at present to carry all required water. The approximate cost of necessary work on No. 1 drain would be £B. I might mention that this expenditure would come out of money from the Bank of New Zealand received for roading the Waitoa Estate.

On the motion of Mr Strange, it was decided to spend £8 in cleaning out No. 1 drain at Waitoa. —Willow Trees. —

A letter was received from It. Whitten, asking to be allowed to treat a portion of the willow trees on the river banks, on the condition that if the treatment is successful he should have tho contract for clearing all the trees at 15s per chain. He stated that he would not ask for the money for six months so as to see if the treatment is a success.

Mr Corbett moved that the man be allowed to clear four chains without any guarantee, the engineer to select the place where the work is to be done.

This was carried. The tender of G. Sheehan at £SS was accepted for the construction of a concrete culvert on the- main road at Wailcino. Tenders were received for carting and for the supply of timber and ironmongery for 12 months, and they were referred to a sub-committee to consider and report to the Council.—lt was decided to strengthen the' suspension bridge at Karangahake at an estimated cost of £l4O 16s Sd. —The Council decided to draw the attention of the Railway Department to the dangerous level railway crossing in Seddon - street, Waikino- It was decided to ask the Minister for Mines whether the promised subsidy of £2 for £1 for the purchase of a public battery at Waitekauri was st’U available. —The of £lO was voted as a grant to the Waikino library.—A motion to dispense With the services of the engineer, on account of the financial position of the county, was lost, four voting for the motion and five against it. —The Finance Committee’s report showed the overdraft to be £11,409 10s 3d ; total indebtedness £11,631 16s 4d, of which amount £1927 11s Sd would be recoverable, and Government receipts last month £2820 / s Sd. Accounts amounting to £2218 16s lOd were passed for payment.
