Piako Mounted Rifles

Of late this Company’s numerical and financial strength has improved considerably. The officers have thoroughly enteredjinto their dut’es, while the non-commissioned officers are determined to do their share of the work. The Troopers themselves take great interest in their drill, and make a point of putting in an appearance at all parades, in order to become efficient. The horses average very well indeed, and altogether the Company is a credit to the district. The Camp just ended was both interesting and instructive. The naroei of those who took part in the Battalion Shield Competition are Sergeant T- Taylcr (in command), Corporals Scherer, p. Scott, B. Cooper, and Troopers T. Scherer, T. Hanna, Horne, G. Bellamy, and Alf Wade. The squad succeeded iu running a very good second. It might be mentioned that Sergeant V. Hamilton’s troops (Morrinsville) were a strong combination, and after the first range it was thought would take a lot of beating, but uufortuthey did not hear the “ cease fire ” whistle and where disqualified. *

At the Camp inspection parade on Friday Colonel Wolfe presented Sergeant W. W- Maingay with a lqng and efficient service medal Q.U years continuous service). The Colonel congratulated the Sergeant on his accomplishment. On Saturday morm ing Colonel Bell presented Sergeant Maingay with a gold watch (donated by Lieut. Campbell) for the best shot in the Piako Mounted Pities for the year IPOB. On Sunday morning Captain TattersalJ presented Sergeant Mainwith a gold badge, for best shot in Second Regiment A.M.R ; Corporal Cooper was presented with a marks • man’s badge, whilo others were awarded service stars for three and six years,

Promotions in the Piako Mounted Rifles have been made as follows :—■ Sergeant Maingay to be Sergeant Major ; Corporals Cooper, Scott, and Scherer to be Sergeants, and Troopers Bellamy, Ifarvio, Swinburne, Seales, and Alf Wild to be Corporals-
