THE PRICE OF MEAT.

(To the Editor) S’r,—Some time ago there appeared several letters in your paper anent the price of meat, but up to the present we are still paying exhorbitant rates for our beef and mutton. Why should we he asked to pay such prohioitive prices. I notice lint one of the butchers in Te Aroha, who, by the way, is one of our City Fathers, objected strongly to paying the assistant electrician more than £1 10s a week. Fancy a man getting such a miserable wage, and having to nav Kd a pound for decent steak Tt is nothing more or less than d n light lobbojy. If the master butcher in question gets his men to work for 30s a week he must be making a fortune considering the present price charged for meat. I noticed the following paragraph in yesterday’s Auckland Herald : “ The price of meat went down Id per lb last weak in -Wellington. The reduction is the result of the lack of demand for cur meat produce on the London market, and the consequent congestion that has ensued upon a bad winter at Home. The refa ; l butchers are making the most of the occasion by labelling their meat as if they were holding a “ grand autumn sale ” (says the Dominion). The daily auction sale of meat at the fruit markets is still attracting attention”

I would suggest that some of the local tradesmen add a Meat Agency to their business, and get their supplies from Morrinsville, Hamilton, or Paeroa. There is money in it. You, Mr Editor, made a mistake recently when you stated that the Te Aroha ‘ prices compared very favourably with olher districts, while the meat is just as good. Such is not the case by a long way. The quality is alright, but the price is prohibitive. I would respectfully ask our butchers to revise their pries list.—l am, etc,, Beefeater.
