Police Constables Sentenced
Wellington, June 2. At tho Magistrate’s Court 10-day Mr Riddell, S.M., gave his decision in the case in which Police Constables John E. Watson and Wm. Joseph Gardiner wrre charged with assaulting Wm. Rolfe and his wife on the night of May 10th. His Worship commented in strong terms on the conduct ot the men. He had carefully considered the ease from every side, and if there was a possible chance of finding some redeeming feature in favour of defendants he should be glad to, but be could not do so. Watson was fined the maximum ponalty of £lO, and Gardiner £5. Gardiner was also convicted of assault on Mrs Rolfe, and sentenced to 21 days’ impiisonraent.
