Mr Geo. Sherlock has res'gned the conductorship of the Methodist Church choir, after three years’ faithful service. Regret was expressed at losing Mr Sherlock. Mr Rayner has been appointed choirmaster.
Dr. Henry, Shacklcton, father of the famous explorer, contradicts the statement that his son was born in a London suburb. He was horn he states, in Kilkea, County Kildare, Ireland, on February 15th, 1874, and did not go to England until he was 11 years of age.
The Minister for Public Works, Hon. R. McKenzie, in the course of a statement on the subject of railway construction, said the Government had no intention of curtailing expenditure in that direction “We want,” he said, ‘ ‘ fo get railways and roads to opon up the country which is ly : ng idle. Every one of the new railways in the North Island is going to open up an enormous extent of country for settlement.” Speaking at tho Thames recently Mr Robert McNab made reference to famous marksmen furnished by Thames in years gone past. His remarks were loudly applauded and many of those present called to meniory the names of those who did good work in this connection. To single out just afew —J. W. Walker, J. Gordon. Arch, and Jas. Thomas F. Sykes, P. Ware, F. Stone, H. Hill, J. Gritiiin, Bull, Londson, Baxter, G. Domney, J. Brownlee, J, Parslow, and later on W. H. Lucas and J. luglis. And there are many others.
A reward of £1 is offered for information as to the whereabouts of several cattle.
Quite an enjoyable time was spent 9n Thursday evening last in the Public Hall by the members of Miss Milgrew’s dancing class. “The San Toy ” fruit emporium and confectionery, is now open next to Johnson’s grocery and ironmongery, Whitaker-street. The prices quoted by the proprietor in this issue go to show that he is satisfied to work on the old axiom “ small profits and quick returns. The “ San Toy ” aupjier room is being fitted up with all speed, and when finished will doubtless receive a fair share of public patronage. The Presbytery of Wellington has recently taken steps to start an orphanage. A house in Brooklyn, which will accommodate thirty boys and girls under the age of ten years, has been rented and an experienced matron appointed. A start has been made with four orphans, but it is expected that the orphanage will soon be full. The Auckland Presbytery is having plans prepared for an orphanage and hopes to soon posccss a building both large and suitable.

McKay, remanded from Saturday last for medical treatment, was again brought before the Court, charged with drunkenness. T 1 e accused pleaded “ Guilty.” Constable M;i.ckje stated that accused had paid all expenses in eon paction with the medical examination, etc. The Bench convicted and discharged McKay, on tj r 0 understanding that ho return to Auckland by thp next train. A meeting of the members of tho Ladies’ Hockey Club took place last evenr ing, when it was decided to hold an opening practice n* xt Wednesday afternoon at 2,30 Tho gentlemen are to be invited to attend the practice.
